Fall prevention: the way forward

“Fractures have a profound impact on quality of life, greatly diminishing mobility and independence.By correctly identifying those at risk,NHS trusts could save time, money and most importantly, lives.”
National Osteoporosis Society

AS THE AVERAGE LIFE EXPECTANCY RISES, there is a strong focus on reducing the number of falls within the older adult.
IPRS provide objective evidence-based rehabilitation equipment to enhance the service that you provide. The Biodex range of equipment is widely used for both falls prevention, and rehabilitation once someone has fallen.

The ability to provide patients with objective feedback motivates the patient and highlights exact training and rehab needs. There are three key areas that this equipment fits into the Older Adult Market:

  • NHS hospitals – Physiotherapy inpatient and outpatient wards, neurorehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, occupational therapy, elderly rehabilitation centres etc.
  • Community - Home visits, rehabilitation, training and testing services, falls clinics, community hospitals
  • Nursing, retirement and care homes

The use of this equipment cannot only reduce the number of falls, but also prove to be a sound financial investment. This can be achieved be screening ‘at risk’ people thus reducing the number of patients presenting at A&E who have fallen, and reduce the number needing surgery ie hip replacements. It can also speed up the recovery, thus reducing inpatient time.

THE FACTS ABOUT FALLS

Falls among the elderly cost the government £981 million a year

Almost 60% of the cost of a fall is borne by the NHS, with the remainder spent on long term care

Last year, in the UK,nearly 700,000 people over 60 were taken to A&E after falling, and over 204,000 were admitted to hospital

It costs aproximately £5,000 to admit just one patient, plus the further costs of the duration of the stay and any surgery

Hip fractures, whichoccur in about 60,000 people a year who fall, cost the NHS £1.7bn and are associated with up to 14,000 deaths
